Why Plant Bulbs?

Bulbs provide early color. While the rest of the landscape is just beginning to show signs of life in the spring, bulbs are up and blooming. Want more color than a cherry tree can provide? Can't wait for the petunias? Plant bulbs! They start the growing season with a bang.

Zone Map Our bulbs bloom in the spring but must be planted
in the fall-between late September (where winters
are harsh) and December (in the South and Southwest).

Spring Color Starts in Fall

Spring-flowering bulbs, which include tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses, have a growth cycle that sets them apart from most other plants. These bulbs grow and bloom in the spring, soak up the sunlight they need to produce the following year's flowers and then close up shop for summer, vanishing from sight. Once dormant, a bulb can be dug up, transported across town (or around the globe) and stored dry for several months, waiting patiently to return to the earth. But a bulb's patience is limited: it must find its way back into the ground before winter. That's because a spring-flowering bulb needs a long period of winter cold in the ground to grow and flower properly. So spring is the time to enjoy bulbs, but not to plant them. Bulbs must be planted in the Fall.

Colorblends: Tulips Done Differently

Lipsticks There is something new in the world of tulips. Not a new variety; in Holland, where most tulips are grown, new tulips are introduced all the time. What's different is Colorblends—mixtures of two, three and sometimes four tulips that make car-stopping spring tapestries. Every fall, we plant out dozens of blend ideas that combine tulips of complementary or contrasting colors, tulips of different shapes, tulips of varying heights, tulips that bloom at slightly different times. When we hit on a combination we like, we pre-blend the bulbs in bags of 100 in the fall for shipment all over the United States. All you do is plant the bulbs in the fall and enjoy the display in the spring. With over 20 years of blending experience under our belt, we now have dozens of tulip blends to choose from—there's a tulip blend for every taste and every landscape need. And our wholesale prices make it possible to plant not just a handful of bulbs but many hundred, for a great spring display.

When you plant a tulip Colorblend like
Lipsticks, you may need to hire
an off-dutycop to direct traffic.

Daffodils Daffodils are deer- and rodent-proof.
They're also beautiful and perennial.
Gold is the color that most often comes
to mind when people think of daffodils,
but it's just the tip of the iceberg. Our
Daffodil 100 blend shows you the rest.

Looking for a Critter-Proof Perennial Bulb? Plant Daffodils!

Where a bright, cheerful early-spring bulb display is wanted, daffodils are the answer. Where deer mow down every flower in sight or rodents munch below ground on roots and bulbs, daffodils are the answer. Where a reliably perennial, self-propagating (but never invasive) bulb is required, daffodils are the answer. Where splashes of early color in fields or along the edge of woods are in order, you guessed it: daffodils are the answer. And there is so much more than yellow to choose from! How about a pink-cupped daffodil with white petals? Or a yellow daffodil with a big orange nose? Perhaps you prefer the timeless beauty of pure white? Could you do with a fragrant daffodil, one you could really sink your nose into? The world of wholesale daffodils is bigger than you may think. We invite you to check out our Daffodil Depot for more information, help with selection and hard-to-find varieties offered only on the web.

Bulbs of Spring Muscari, or grape hyacinths, are prized for
their brilliant blue color, which looks
great with any midseason tulip.

Beyond Tulips and Daffodils: The Many Other Beautiful Bulbs of Spring

If tulips and daffodils are the meat and potatoes of the spring landscape, crocuses and hyacinths and muscari and a variety of other bulbs are the hors d'oeuvres, the sauce, the spices and the dessert. What would spring be without a dash of early crocus? Why would you deprive yourself of a big spread of fragrant hyacinths? Wouldn't it be interesting and fun to say good-by to spring and hello to summer with the lollipops of the giant alliums? The ingredients you need to make a delicious bulb display are all right here. Bon appetit

Great Bulbs, Great Flowers

The key to having a great spring flower show is to plant big, healthy bulbs. We import top-size bulbs from the Netherlands and store them in a well-ventilated warehouse for shipment all over the United States. You will be amazed by the size and the health of our beautiful Dutch bulbs. We are pleased to receive almost as many compliments on the quality of our bulbs as we do on the flowers.
