When to Plant
Delivery & Planting Times
Spring-flowering bulbs must be planted in the fall. They need cool soil to make roots before the onset of winter. Cool fall weather arrives at different times from north to south and from high elevations to low.
Please note that the temperature of the soil lags behind the air temperature. You can generally plant later than the windows provided in this map. As long as the ground is not frozen, you can still plant.

Painting the spring landscape with bulbs is both easy and hard. Planting is straightforward (a statement your back may object to). Arriving at a pleasing composition can be a challenge. One way to get there: Limit your palette. This collection of daffodils and grape hyacinths includes only shades of white, yellow, and blue. The components, in order of bloom: daffodil Elka (200 bulbs per crate), Muscari Latifolium (300 bulbs), daffodil Yellow Ocean (100 bulbs), Grape Hyacinths (300 bulbs), and daffodil Sun Disc (100 bulbs). For a perennial performance, you must wait to mow until the bulb foliage has completely yellowed. Sold in crates of 1000 only. Each component is packed separately and labeled and can also be purchased on its own. Introduced 2022.
Note to customers in warm climates: Some of the bulbs in this collection require prechilling and are unlikely to perform well beyond the first spring.

Bulb size is determined by the circumference around the largest part of the bulb. Colorblends only delivers top size bulbs. Large bulbs produce more or larger flowers than small bulbs.

There are no rules for planting a Color Your Grass collection. Jacqueline van der Kloet, the Dutch designer who inspired Color Your Grass, suggests the following approach:
1. Choose a sunny location where the soil drains well.
2. Mow the grass to improve the visibility of the bulbs.
3. Open the bags and mix the bulbs in a bulb crate or wheelbarrow.
4. Toss the bulbs out onto the grass.
5. Plant the bulbs where they lie.
Detailed instructions for planting according to Jacqueline’s method will be included with every order.
