Winter Wolf’s Bane

Eranthis cilicica

Spring’s first yellow. Its little cup-shaped flowers, which sit on frilly leaves, open at the first hint of warmth. Happiest under deciduous trees, where it may self-sow. Bulbs are tiny. Plant lavishly.
Deer and Rodent Resistant

Item # 6022
Height 3—4 inches
Sunlight Part (3-4 hours sun per day)
Soil Evenly moist
Flower Color Yellow
Bulb Size 5cm+
Bulb size is determined by the circumference around the largest part of the bulb. Colorblends only delivers top size bulbs. Large bulbs produce more or larger flowers than small bulbs.
USDA Zones 4a—7b
Hardy in USDA zones 4a to 7b in the South or 9b on the West Coast. Prechill in zones 7b and warmer in the South, Southwest, and California.
Bloom Time Very Early
Bloom times are relative within the spring bulb season, which varies from place to place and year to year. They are intended to help you plan a sequence of bloom from Very Early season to Very Late season. About two weeks separate Early from Mid and Mid from Late. The start and duration of bloom is heavily dependent on the weather. Warm temperatures speed up growth and flowering; cold temperatures slow them down.

Planting Instructions

Best in dappled sunlight and well-drained soil that does not dry out entirely in summer. It’s hard to tell top from bottom on eranthis tubers, but it doesn’t matter which end is up: The tubers know to send shoots up and roots down. To speed planting, you can put several tubers in a single planting hole. If left undisturbed, eranthis may seed itself about, eventually forming a yellow carpet in early spring.

Depth of Planting Hole 2 inches
Spacing 2 inches apart
